Oversized Large Sand Filled Flood Bag Barriers

The Beluga™ Bag barrier is a unique flood control system that is ideal for protection of important property and infrastructure.

Beluga is a concertina style, big bag, flood barrier consisting of a heavy duty oversized bag, divided into 5 distinct chambers. Use sand or other aggregate or fill material to fill bags and to create a heavy duty levee to hold back water.

Beluga bags ship flattened on pallets, ready to be opened, positioned and filled on site. Each bag is 15ft long, 3ft deep, and 40” high and replaces approximately 750 standard sandbags. Because there’s no wasted space, Beluga Barriers use roughly 1/2 the amount of sand required for an equivalent sandbag barrier and significantly less labor to position and fill.

Beluga bag barriers can be installed and filled by a relatively small crew and deployed quickly in advance of an expected flood.

Ships Flat

Conveniently shipped flat on pallets for easy transport to flood sites.

Sand Filled

Filled with sand, gravel, cement or any applicable fill material.

40" flood barrier height

Protection Height

Achieve 40” of heavy duty flood protection height when filled.

Protect Against Heavy Flooding

Beluga™ big bag flood protection barriers can rapidly deploy against major flooding events. Beluga FIBC bags can be used for a variety of applications and can help in the protection of municipal buildings, homes, entire neighborhoods, infrastructure and more. Use Beluga bags along riverfront paths, lakefronts, oceanfront sea walls, on bays, around a building or facility and anywhere floods can occur. Beluga Bags are exceptionally effective for the following uses:

Cofferdams

Keep water contained in a particular area by blocking its flow and preventing its migration to other areas.

Use Beluga bags, filled with sand or cement, to protect against coastal erosion. Efficiently deploy bags, without extensive site prep. Reinforce waterfronts, river fronts, and other erosion prone areas.

Coastal Erosion

Water Diversion

Use Beluga barriers to divert water away from sensitive infrastructure and to protect property from rising flood waters.

Place oversized Beluga bags on top of sewer drains and outlets to prevent sewage back flow from sewer back ups or rising flood water levels.

Sewer sealing

Levee Heightening

Sewer Drain Sealing

Reinforce and heighten levees by adding Beluga barriers on top of existing levees. Fill gaps in the levee or repair breaches.

Beluga stands up against heavy storm surges. The bag’s heavy fill and 40” protection height keeps Beluga Bags in place and stops flood waters in its tracks.

Replaces 750 Sandbags

A 5 chamber Beluga bag replaces nearly 750 sandbags, while also taking nearly 1/40th the labor hours to deploy. Simply position, open, and fill.

Withstands Heavy Flooding

Beluga Bags are designed to withstand heavy flooding, storm surges and can be used for cofferdams. Once filled with sand, Beluga weighs 13,150lbs.

Uses 50% less Sand

Because sand is contained in chambers, it is possible to achieve higher heights of protection with 50% less sand. Typical sandbags must be stacked with a wider base relative to height, but Beluga bags stand tall relative to base width.

 Why Beluga?

Speed of Deployment

  • Designed for easy deployment by unskilled labor

  • Each complete 5 chamber Beluga weighs only 50lbs

  • With proper filling equipment and 2 persons, expect to install a 100ft berm in approximately 2.5 hours.

Bag Capacity

  • Bags have a capacity of 30 cubic feet of sand per section x 5 sections = 150 cubic feet of sand per 5 compartment bag

  • 4,500lbs (Safe Working Load) per chamber

  • 22,500lbs (Safe Working Load) per 5 chamber system

Damming Ability

  • A single layer of Beluga Bags can withstand 3ft of water.

  • Stack multiple bags to create up to a 9ft high barrier (Engineer sign-off required for stacking).

  • Ground conforming design will contour to the surface below

  • Use on concrete, asphalt, sand, grass, mud and more

  • Beluga™ Barriers are designed to be deployed by unskilled personnel. Each complete 5 compartment barrier weighs only 50lbs, with wooden inserts, allowing two people to move sections into position and to expand the bags compartments, like an accordion, for filling. Single Barriers are only 10lbs. Filling typically is done with material handling equipment. When full, single Beluga bags can be moved using traditional material handling equipment (forklifts, cranes, Lull’s, etc). The 5 compartment bag can be moved using a heavy duty spreader bar. For full instructions, visit our instructions page HERE

  • Set up time varies based on location, but with proper handling equipment, a 100ft long berm can be constructed using the BG5 - Beluga 5 Compartment bag in approximately 2.5 hours with 2 people plus equipment operator.

  • We recommend filling Beluga bags with sand or small gravel, but you can fill the bags with concrete or even other earthen material available on site.

  • Beluga™ bags are made from a very durable 170 GSM fabric, that can support up to 4500lbs per compartment and all seams are double stitched for added strength and durability.

  • While you could fill Beluga bags by hand, we recommend filling them with material handling equipment for ease of fill and transport. A front end loader, backhoe, skid steer or other handing equipment will help speed deployment of Beluga flood barriers.

  • A single 5 compartment Beluga bag (BG5) replaces the need for about 750 standard sandbags. There is no wasted space, so Beluga Flood Barriers use roughly half the amount of sand required for an equivalent sandbag barrier and you need significantly less labor to position and fill.

  • Beluga bags are an ideal solution for flood control, coastal erosion, infrastructure protection, cofferdams, and more. They are our most durable and effective flood control system and are designed for heavy duty use in small and large quantities.

  • Yes! Beluga™ bags are ideal for creating heavy duty cofferdams to keep water out of work sites and for protecting workers during river, lakeside, oceanside and creekside work.

  • Each Beluga bag is treated with a 2200 hour UV protection package, which protects the bag material from degradation and damage due to sun exposure.

  • Beluga™ Barriers are ground conforming, and when filled follow the contour of the ground below. Beluga bags can be used on all types of surfaces - concrete, asphalt, sand, grass, gravel, mud, and more.

  • Single Beluga bags are typically used for shorter runs or to terminate a run of larger Beluga™ Bags. You can also use single FIBC bags to transport bulk materials, to seal off sewer grates, and to provide ballast for other applications.

  • The easiest way to break down a Beluga barrier flood wall is to tip the bags on their side, allowing the sand to spill into a pile that can then be collected using a front end loader. Individual, single compartment, bags can be lifted and transported offsite for later use. Some municipalities have suction equipment that can be used to suck out sand from Beluga compartments and into a dump truck or storage bin. • Beluga bags ship flattened on pallets, ready to be opened, positioned and filled. We can ship about 90 of the 5 compartment bags on a pallet, banded in bales.
