Case Study: Hammerhead™ Aluminum Flood-Log Barrier Protects Homeowner During Hurricane Helene - Fort Myers, Florida
CLIENT:
A residential homeowner located in Fort Myers, Florida was looking for a comprehensive flood protection solution to protect multiple vulnerable locations surrounding the residence and property.
The property, surrounded by water inlets is located in a FEMA designated Special Flood Hazard Area (AE Zone), according to the FEMA Flood Maps and The National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL).
They sought to protect the home from recurring flood damage after experiencing extensive flooding from Hurricane Ian in 2022.
CHALLENGE:
In September 2022, Hurricane Ian devastated properties across Florida, leading to significant flooding throughout the Fort Myers area.
The client required an immediate, durable solution to prevent future floodwaters from entering these vulnerable locations during the upcoming storm season and reached out to Garrison for flood planning guidance and assistance.
The lanai, garage, front doors, and side doors were exposed to nearly 2 feet of water, causing extensive damage and requiring costly repairs.
The areas most affected were:
Lanai: The enclosed outdoor area, which serves as an extended living space, was vulnerable to flooding during storms, leaving the area waterlogged and damaging furniture.
Two-Car Garage: The large garage, housing personal vehicles and important equipment, was prone to flood waters rushing in, posing a risk to not only the vehicles but also the contents stored inside.
Double Front Entryway Doors: The primary entryway to the home was susceptible to floodwater, threatening to damage the home’s interior belongings and exterior infrastructure, leading to the potential for long-term issues like mold growth and costly repairs.
Single Side Door: This entry point, though smaller, provided another vulnerable spot for floodwaters to enter, particularly during heavy rains or hurricane conditions.
GOAL:
After experiencing the damage caused during Hurricane Ian, the client realized they needed an effective flood mitigation solution that could prevent future excessive water damage to these critical areas around the property. Located in a FEMA Designated Flood Zone with inlet waterways on each side of the property, a robust, effective and rapidly installed flood mitigation system was paramount.
To protect the flood prone areas around the property from future flood threats and events.
Ensure long-lasting, reliable protection that is easy to deploy when storm warnings are issued and time is of the essence.
Provide the client with peace of mind by preventing property damage due to flood water and minimizing flood risk.
SOLUTION:
After extensive research and consultation, the Hammerhead Aluminum Flood-Log System was recommended by Garrison’s flood technical team for its exceptional durability, ease of deployment and effectiveness in preventing all types of flood threats. Garrison Flood Control worked closely with the client to provide a custom solution tailored to the home’s unique vulnerabilities.
The solution involved the installation of four separate Hammerhead barriers:
Lanai Protection: The largest system was designed to cover the lanai area, ensuring that water would be kept out, preventing potential damage to the outdoor living space.
Two-car Garage Protection: Two separate stackable flood-log systems were installed for the garage, one for the double garage door and another for the single side garage door. These areas were especially vulnerable during Hurricane Ian, as floodwaters easily entered the home through these entry points.
Double Front Entryway Door Protection: Another system was installed to cover the primary entryway front doors, adding an essential barrier to protect against flooding from storm surges and rising flood waters.
Side Door Protection: The final system was installed for the single side entry door, providing flood protection for this less visible, yet critical area.
The entire solution was custom fabricated to fit each of these four key areas precisely, ensuring maximum effectiveness.
“The team at Garrison Flood Control has been amazing to work with from start to finish. They were responsive, quick, and incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. I had significant flood damage after Hurricane Ian and knew I needed a serious solution to protect my home. The Hammerhead Flood Log system has already proven its worth, especially during Hurricane Helene.”
INSTALLATION:
After Garrison’s expert team of flood installers reviewed and surveyed the property and site, they realized that the client required some minor modifications around the home, including slight adjustments to the decorative shutters and brickwork to make room for the aluminum posts that secure the flood-logs into position.
The client placed their Hammerhead order and scheduled Installation Services with the Garrison Flood Technical Install Team in July 2024.
