Hurricanes: How Do They Form?

Here we are going to break down just how hurricanes form as well as some solutions to help protect against the effects.

Hurricanes are among the most dangerous natural disasters that the world can offer. Each peak hurricane season the world sees these severe storms impact communities significantly. However, regarding hurricanes, it is important to analyze the environmental factors that create these super storms.

The frequency and severity of hurricanes is increasing as each year passes. Understanding how these super storms form allows us to better prepare for the effects they have on our communities, homes and businesses.

Here we are going to break down just how hurricanes form as well as some solutions to help protect against the effects.

Hurricanes: How They Start

Most hurricanes, in the Atlantic basin at least, begin usually with a wave of storm activity usually off the coast of Africa. This disturbance is then traveling across the Atlantic ocean. As this disturbance travels, it is interacting with warm water temperatures that rest along and near the equator.

The reason for prime hurricane conditions is solely through warm water temperatures. Historically, the warmer the water temperatures are, the faster the formation of hurricanes. Disturbances can form into official hurricanes all within a span of a few hours. The constant monitoring done by NOAA allows people to stay up to date on a storm’s latest severity.

As these disturbances travel across the Atlantic, they are able to gather up the “fuel” in a sense to completely form into completely destructive hurricanes. Therefore, the longer that a disturbance has to interact with warmer Atlantic waters, the stronger they can become.

These potential hurricanes draw moisture up from the ocean. Think of a hurricane as an automobile. The fuel for that car is the warm, moist air from the surface. As the air rises it creates a low pressure system beneath it. This causes a cycle for the air to constantly try to fill the low pressure space underneath.

As the air constantly circulates, it causes this storm system to rapidly twist at higher and higher speeds. This is occurring all while storms intensify due to the warm water temperatures on the surface. The intensity of these storms results in severely high wind speeds, heavy rainfall, as well as amplified lightning

In order for a storm to actually become a true hurricane, the disturbance must reach a certain wind speed threshold. Hurricanes are put into certain categories. Category 1 hurricanes are between wind speeds of 74 and 95 miles per hour. These classifications go all the way up to Category 5 hurricanes that are in excess of 157 miles per hour.

Hurricanes & Flood Protection

The majority of damage that hurricanes cause is through flooding. With every severe hurricane that rolls through, there is an opportunity for torrential rain and deep flood waters. The damage to communities from these super storms can sometimes reach billions of dollars in property repairs.

In order to stay ahead of the storm, early prevention will always put you in the best possible position to succeed. Whether you are a homeowner, business owner, government employee or property manager there is always a need for effective and easy to use flood protection.

Beluga™ Large Bag Flood Barrier

The Beluga™ Bag barrier is a unique flood control system that is ideal for protection of important property and infrastructure.

Beluga is a concertina style, big bag, flood barrier consisting of a heavy duty oversized bag, divided into 5 distinct chambers. Use sand or other aggregate or fill material to fill bags and to create a heavy duty levee to hold back water.

Beluga bags ship flattened on pallets, ready to be opened, positioned and filled on site. Each bag is 15ft long, 3ft deep, and 40” high and replaces approximately 750 standard sandbags. Because there’s no wasted space, Beluga Barriers use roughly 1/2 the amount of sand required for an equivalent sandbag barrier and significantly less labor to position and fill.

Beluga™ big bag flood protection barriers can rapidly deploy against major flooding events. Beluga FIBC bags can be used for a variety of applications and can help in the protection of municipal buildings, homes, entire neighborhoods, infrastructure and more. Use Beluga bags along riverfront paths, lakefronts, oceanfront sea walls, on bays, around a building or facility and anywhere floods can occur.
